Full Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic structural engineer to join our engineering studio in Clerkenwell and apply their creative design skills on a challenging, high-profile project as part of our interdisciplinary design team.

You will have a unique opportunity to work on the Restoration and Renewal of the Palace of Westminster, one of the most iconic buildings in the world.

You will need a strong academic record with a degree from a JBM accredited University and a passion for architecture and building design.

You will have been working since graduation on interesting and challenging projects and be keen to progress towards professionally qualified status.

As part of the multi-disciplinary team, you will be working closely with architects and other designers to articulate your creative ideas persuasively through sketching, verbally and in writing.

You will have responsibility from the outset and be given the chance to take on more as you gain more experience and expand your skills on the project.

As a key team member, you will actively contribute to the emerging structural design options, displaying both your aptitude and enthusiasm for hard work whilst being given the opportunity to express your creative ideas as part of a collaborative team-working style, fostering strong working relationships with architects, engineers and other disciplines.

You will be using your strong analytical and problem-solving skills to resolve engineering problems through rational and methodical thought to achieve an optimum solution.

Your proactive approach to collecting information on the existing building will support your evaluation of design options and the development of inspirational engineering solutions.

Being part of the team will offer you the opportunity to build on your existing digital design skills to contribute to a project that is expected to be at the forefront of modelling innovation, furthering your technical skills by communicating designs through 3D models alongside traditional hand sketches and calculations.

Essential requirements :

Structural engineer with a good grounding in the scheming and design of structures in concrete and steel

Understanding of the design of basements and other substructure interventions

An appreciation of the challenges associated with existing buildings and the integration of new and existing construction

An understanding of the design of masonry and timber

An awareness of the challenges and the constraints that come with working with existing buildings

Have a pragmatic approach and possess strong problem-solving techniques

Excellent technical aptitude and analytical skills

Knowledge and experience in structural software design packages, including finite element

An appreciation of temporary works and buildability considerations

Able to demonstrate practical and collaborative involvement with other designers and contractors

Desirable skills (a selection of these) :

Technical

Has worked on the adaptation of historic buildings

Experience with refurbishment or restoration schemes

Knowledge of the analysis and design of existing fabric, particularly masonry and timber

Experience in scheme design of basements and other substructure interventions

Familiarity with specifying and overseeing opening up to existing structures

Ability to specify conservation-based repairs to historic fabric

Experience in temporary works design and construction sequencing

Experience working in a BIM environment

Management

Experience with attending client meetings and being part of discussions with the wider project team

Hold an appreciation of the commercial issues related to design and the importance of delivering projects on time, within budget and with quality

Experience in managing others in the delivery of information

Highly motivated and passionate about

The ability to prioritise tasks and work to tight deadlines under pressure

Strong interpersonal skills, able to build relationships at all levels with clients and employees alike and across all professional disciplines

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with an ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy

Committed to medium-term project goals, Due to the nature of the project, the successful candidate would be required to undergo a security clearance process and therefore you will be required to have at least 3 years UK residency within the last 5 years.
