Full Job Description

Lewis ward is a male ward at the Maudsley Hospital. We provide care and treatment for men, aged 18-65 years old, with sever mental health illness. As a team we provide care for men who live in the London Borough of Southwark. The ward has an established friendly and welcoming team who are dedicated and committed to the delivery of excellent care to our patients. We offer psychiatric assessment, care and treatment in hospital, which reduces the risk to self and others.

We appreciate that the role of a ward manager can be challenging but also rewarding you will have an administration manager in the establishment to take on a considerable amount of the administration tasks this will help release your time to focus on clinical care. This is in addition to support from a Matron, Clinical Service Lead and Deputy Head of Nursing.

About the location:

Lewis Ward is located in Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill, Camberwell, London, SE5 8AZ.

Our Trust headquarters is located at Denmark Hill less than 5 minutes from the train station (zone 2). We also provide services and operate across other locations, such as London boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; and substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Lambeth, Greenwich and Wandsworth.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic nurse to lead one of our male acute inpatient services. We are looking for an assertive, approachable and creative individual to manage the day to day running of the ward including role modelling high standards of care, service development, promoting good practice, maintaining patient and staff safety and leading on quality improvement projects.

This is an important but challenging, band 7 ward manager, secondment position. The successful candidate will therefore be taking up a privileged position in leading a high performing, efficient ward made up of staff who are keen to maintain great care delivery for patients experiencing acute mental health issues and requiring a thorough assessment.

In collaboration with the Consultant Psychiatrist, the successful candidate is expected to lead the team in providing high quality, compassionate nursing care and will be able to demonstrate this through compliance with performance outcomes. The post holder will also ensure that supervision and appraisal systems are robustly implemented, and that staff are supported to ensure that the care provided is of the highest possible standard in line with the Trust's Mission.

The Team Leader is ultimately responsible for providing a safe environment within which all staff can deliver care and support to patients coming through the service.

  • The post-holder will:
  • Be prepared to physically move between sites as needed.

  • Ensure that they are fully aware of current developments and practice in their clinical area. Acknowledge their own limitations and discuss/identify their training and development needs with their line manager.

  • Make effective use of supervision with their line manager on a regular and agreed basis.

  • Be aware of the need to reflect on their practice both as clinician and manager.

  • Manage their time efficiently.

  • Be aware of and adhere to all Trust Policies and act as a role model to other staff.

  • Meet the NMC's requirements for Standards of Professional Practice, Code of Conduct and Post Registration and Practice (PREP) and Revalidation

  • Recognise emotional and mental effort required to fulfil the post.
