Full Job Description

The UK Insurance Legal Counsel will be part of Wakam Legal Partnerships Team.

The UK Insurance Legal Counsel's scope will notably include the design and/or review of proposed insurance distribution structures, the negotiation of insurance related contracts with both Wakam BtoB clients (insurance distributors - MGAs -, insurtechs, non-insurance-specialists) and BPOs, primarily in the UK, but also across continental European territories where Wakam operates.

The UK Insurance Legal Counsel's mission will also consist of leading on contract reviews and negotiation for Wakam UK business opportunities, and a key contributor for the definition and implementation of legal processes and best practices in relation to Wakam UK (e.g., supervise and review the creation and update of templates of agreements for UK, contribute to the improvement of the Legal Partnerships Team's processes and tools, raise awareness about UK legal/regulatory items to non-expert people…).

The UK Insurance Legal Counsel will also work among the other members of Wakam Legal Partnerships Team and contribute to the team activities regarding Pan-European legal topics.

Main tasks and responsibilities will notably include:

  • Managing & leading a wide range of material and/or complex legal, regulatory & contractual matters and deals (including drafting and negotiating agreements, structuring compliant distribution partnerships, and advising on UK legislation and regulation)

  • Building and maintaining relationships with, supporting, and reporting and updating key business stakeholders on legal and regulatory matters; understanding the business strategy and tactical priorities

  • Translating business decisions into a legal documentation

  • Applying a risk based, creative and solution driven approach, while ensuring maximum legal and reputational protection for Wakam

  • Assisting with the drive for consistency and efficiency across UK and potentially EU by seeking out & sharing expertise and experiences, information, learnings, knowhow and experiences with colleagues and the business, Wakam is not based on a hierarchy but on a methodology where everyone finds their role and knows their objectives.

    UK legal qualification (permission to practise as a solicitor in the UK being a plus)

  • High standards knowledge in UK insurance law and contracts drafting and negotiation

  • Minimum 4 to 7-years-experience required, including a proven experience in-house (UK insurer, broker, or MGA) and/or in law firm(s) (preferably insurance practice)

  • Ability to work in an international and culturally diverse environment

  • Strong oral and written communications skills and a good sense of diplomacy

  • Ability to leverage deep legal expertise to provide business-oriented recommendations in a heavily regulated environment

  • Fluency in English is essential (Fluency in French and/or another European language is a strong asset)
