Breast Translational / Basic Scientist

The Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is seeking an energetic and innovative Translational/Basic Scientist in the field of Breast Cancer to lead an endowed research program. The Translational/Basic Scientist will provide scientific leadership for the breast cancer program. The program is a major growing and expanding program within the Cancer Institute consisting of two board-certified breast cancer surgeons, a breast cancer surgical fellowship, two breast cancer medical oncologists, and a state-of-the-art breast imaging center. In addition, there is a robust clinical trials infrastructure and tumor bank supported by the Cancer Institute. The program is financially supported in part by the Arkansas Breast Cancer Research Program, which has contributed over $8M in research dollars over the last 10 years.

The Translational/Basic Scientist will have a faculty position in the Department of Medicine and hold the Virginia Clinton Kelly endowed chair. In addition, they will have a leadership role on the endowed Breast Cancer Research Fund to help determine the proper use of these funds. Ample lab space will be provided in the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. Successful candidates will have the opportunity for leadership roles on the Disease Oriented Committee, Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee, and Cancer Programs.

Candidates must be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or above, with an MD or MD/PhD, or comparable degree, and have a documented track record in funded breast cancer research. The position will have access to substantial resources including a multiple year support package to conduct clinical and laboratory-based research focused on the unique breast cancer burdens of Arkansas.

This recruiting effort is made possible through significant institutional support and a commitment from the state of Arkansas to support the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute's efforts to attain NCI Designation. The Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute is the only cancer center in the state of Arkansas with a robust cancer research portfolio and a mission to improve cancer outcomes for all Arkansans. Its 170+ members conduct outstanding cancer research within Cancer Therapeutics, Cancer Biology, and Cancer Prevention & Population Sciences research programs. Cancer Institute members receive approximately $20 million in extramural cancer research funds annually, including multiple COBRE grants. The Cancer Institute has six institutional shared resource facilities and has recently hired 23 laboratory-based cancer researchers. Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute researchers also lead four cancer-focused NIH-funded Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence
(COBRE's).
